In My Neighborhood of Gilbert, AZ

Prominent on the horizon going east on Highway 60 in Phoenix, Arizona looms the “Flat Iron” rising 1500 feet above the desert floor, located in Lost Dutchman Mine State Park. It is part of a group of jagged, volcanic peaks and ridges constituting the Superstition Mountains, the largest mountain range surrounding Phoenix with the highest point being 5,000 feet. There are few trees save for those growing along streambeds. [Photographs copywrite of Richard Beitman, Sr. and Adrienne R. Campbell.]

They are photogenic particularly when topped with snow, shrouded in mysterious clouds, the desert floor below is covered with poppies, during glorious southwestern sunsets or emerging in sunlight after a storm. If you live nearby a handy webcam of “Flat Iron” can help you decide if it’s good day to visit: http://www.webcambiglook.com/superstitionmountainaz.html
